Wooden Greenhouses
Greenhouses have long been a popular feature in the garden. OK, so it might not be the most decorative feature in the garden but it is one of the most useful and allows you to grown many different plants you might not have been able to otherwise. Plants might be the thinkgs that people look at in the garden but the greenhouse will help make your plants become a reality.
The problem is that there are so many different types on the market so if you have never owned a greenhouse before and are keen to do so then you might be unsure what type to buy. Although aluminium has become much more popular in recent years because they are lightweight, there are still wooden greenhouses available to buy or you could even make one yourself.
If you are a traditional sort of gardener then you will appreciate the beauty of a wooden greenhouse. Most of these will be made from Canadian Western Red Cedar because they last very well outside and they are also surprisingly rot-resistant. These are the tradition type which is what people wouldn’t have used long before the invention on plastic and aluminium.
The problem with some types of green house is that they can often look cheap and nasty. They don’t look like a feature of the garden you would want to be proud of. Instead you would want to keep them hidden out of view. With a wood greenhouse on the other hand you can keep it in a part of your garden you will be happy for anyone to see.
Some will also argue than wood is a much better material for greenhouses and red cedar are very good for keeping a constant temperature throughout your greenhouse compared to aluminium. This makes it a much better environment for your plants to grow in. Because wood is a solid and sturdy material, you can also attach tools to your greenhouse frame so that you can have easy access to them. Simply attach hooks onto the frame and then hand up items such as gloves and trowels. Also, when the weather turns nasty you’ll have plenty of room to add insulation to the glass so that your greenhouse has more protection from the cold weather.
Keeping your green-house in good condition is essential if you want to be able to keep it for many years to come. By applying a coating before winter sets in you will be able to do this very well. Whilst doing this you should also look out for any damages that might be present. Although you will find that many timber framed greenhouses come with a 10 year guarantee, you should ensure that you look after it during this time.
You will notice that there is a price different between wood and other materials, with wood being more expensive. However the more experienced gardeners tend to enjoy using a wood greenhouse more. For beginners or those with very small gardens, then choosing a plastic or aluminium green house might be a better choice.
